Presented here is a list of all the opera recordings in the wonderful UCSB (University of California, Santa Barbara) cylinder collection. The list is up-to-date as of April 2011.
I've pulled the most important information out of the library's database and organized it into a basic index. The idea is to provide a simple alternative to wrestling with a database program, which can only serve up a very constricted view of the holdings at a time.
Here, it's all laid out on the table for your browsing and searching pleasure.
At the time this list was constructed, in April 2011, browsing the UCSB cylinder collection by "operas" yielded 991 hits out of a total collection of 9795 recordings. Something tells me that nowadays you wouldn't find opera accounting for one tenth of all recorded music sales.
In fact, there are 1031 entries in the index below. I added a few recordings here and there that might be of interest to opera fans, such as non-opera works by Rossini. There's an early non-opera recording by Caruso. And don't miss Poor Butterfly and Uncle Josh. There's a small handful of recordings here that are mistakenly labeled "opera" in the cylinder catalog. I left them in, not wishing to be "too bold," and figuring a little over-inclusiveness never hurt anybody. The cylinder project staff has followed the lead of the Library of Congress in deciding where musical theater crosses over into "light opera." If you find errors in the catalog, they'd appreciate hearing from you.
The basic format for each recording in the index is:
cylinderNNNN Opera Name, composer: performer(s) selection title/alternate title(s) (other info) year
When you see a recording that interests you, all you do is copy the "cylinderNNNN" string, which is the UCSB call number, and plug it into the search box on this page (open in a separate browser window):

In the box to the right, choose "UCSB Call Number". Then hit "GO".
In many cases, entering a call number will bring up two or more cylinders. These may merely be additional copies, such as from different personal collections, or perhaps actual alternate takes of the performance.
You'll find my presentation is not completely consistent. I started gathering the information for my own use long before I thought of how useful it might be for other opera fans. Now I wish I had retained complete aria titles and full performer names throughout. But the lack of consistency shouldn't cause any trouble. Be honest now, how many of even the most devoted opera fans know all the arias by their first lines in the original language? (iTunes is out of its brain for forcing this convention down our throats.)
No doubt I introduced many comical goofs in working this up. But some of the data you see here may have been updated or corrected by UCSB since I collected it a few years ago. For example, two recordings of "Di Provenza il mar" from La Traviata (0553 and 2256) were identified as "Ah, fors' è lui che l'anima" at the time I got them.
Some cylinders in the UCSB collection have not been digitized yet. At first, I had flagged these cylinders in the index, but then realized how useless that was. As the cylinders continue to be digitized, you'd have no way of knowing whether to believe the flag or not. If you would like to see a cylinder digitized, UCSB would be happy for you to "adopt" it.
I streamlined the presentation of the year of release as follows:
~1906 = "1906?" or "ca. 1906" 1902+ = lowest year in a range, such as "1902 or 1903", or, "between 1902 and 1906".

The Gordon Getty collection, most of which are opera recordings, were added to the UCSB catalog more recently (writing in April 2011). About 30 of them duplicate cylinders already included in the UCSB collection. In each case I did a comparative listen. I found that, in general, the Getty cylinders have a cleaner background, but the music may be slightly duller. They often run a hair slower, as well. Which sounds "better" would be a matter of personal taste. But there were several instances of clear winners, in my opinion, where one cylinder was both cleaner and brighter than the other. I use the "greater than" sign ">" to indicate superiority. The Getty collection cylinders are recognized by a leading "8".

Got all the opera thoroughly listened to and digested? You might dig around the UCSB cylinder collection for:
Non-opera songs by opera composers: Balfe, Benedict, Gounod, Massenet, Planquette, etc.
Italian song composers: Becucci, Capua, Curtis, Denza, Tosti.
Renowned classical composers: Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, etc.
Oratorios and masses.
To search for a name in the database, whether a composer, lyricist, or performer, use the "Author" option in the drop-down box on the right.
To search for a term that would appear in a "note" or as a "subject" fitting the work, choose the "Subject" option in the drop-down box. Use "Subject" to bring up "oratorios" or "masses", for instance. Searching for "operas" in this way produces the same results as "browsing" the collection by Operas. Note the importance of the "-s". Searching for "opera" by Subject should turn up nothing, or close to it. Opera recordings in the database consistently include a line, "Subject: Operas--Excerpts."
In all of these cases, you could simply leave the option at its default, "Keyword", and the program will search for your term(s) in all of the fields, Title, Author, and Subject, perhaps turning up a few more things than you bargained for. "Keyword" will not work for the UCSB call number; for that you must explicitly select the "UCSB Call Number" option in the drop-down box. But if you've made any use of the above index, you know that by now.
