This index of first lines of Mother Goose rhymes in my libary is offered in the good, old spirit of "for what it's worth".
You can tell from my ID scheme (mg1... mg46) that I have altogether about 50 Mother Goose books and phonograph records in my collection (as of May 2010.) Since an index including all 50 sources would be too overwhelming for anyone to ponder for a moment, I decided to include just the "most important" Mother Goose books in my library (as of May 2010.) There are 17 of them.
What good is this index to anyone but me? If nothing else, you might be amazed at how prolific old Mama Goose was! Getting an exact count is very tricky, but there are around 1,400 different rhymes in this 4,768-line index.
If you can make sense of my format, you'll see how much variation there can be right in the first lines, presumably the most important one of the rhyme. If first lines can deviate that much, imagine what goes on in the rest of the rhyme! See my page of "Mother Goose differences" for a small taste of this.
By counting up appearances of each rhyme in these 17 Mother Goose books, you could rank them according to popularity. This might not be a totally scientific study, but it's still kind of interesting and fun. For example, "Hey diddle diddle" and "Little Jack Horner" both run sweeps, appearing in all 17 sources. The masterpiece "A jolly fat miller was Poopleton Bun" appears in only one.
And the index may serve as an inspiration or model for bringing your own library under control. I'd be totally lost without computerized indices. I have a 14,000-line master index (and growing!) to all the individual stories and poems in all the books in my library, plus specialized indices for Mother Goose, Grimms, and Aesop.
I still think of the first two Mother Goose books I acquired (mg1 and mg2) as the basis of my collection. They are reprints of nice, old American and British books, respectively. Those two are what got me going; I had such a grand time comparing the same rhyme across the two books. Books mgo and mg7 are valuable for sheer quantity - each one having about 800 Mother Goose rhymes. I found mg4, "Mother Goose's Melody or Sonets for the Cradle", on the web. I think it's the oldest surviving nursery rhyme book with "Mother Goose" in the title.
You'd think those would cover all of the bases, but, in fact, the other sources, not forgetting the skinnier books and phonograph records not included here, contribute many more rhymes and interesting variants to the total. The lesson is, you can't have too many Mother Goose books. Not to mention, the illustrations make each one fresh and unique.
Here are the first lines, rigorously alphabetized, ignoring case. In an attempt to get all the instances of a certain rhyme to appear together, I did a couple of things. For one, I stripped out periods, commas, and semicolons so they wouldn't confuse matters. If that wasn't enough to bring all the occurrences of the same rhyme together, I simply decided on a "standard" first line. After that, I give the actual first line used, with the page number separating the two. (Look for "...in an oak" just below.) Sometimes, the text after the page number is not a first line, but the title supplied by the editor; the giveaway being the use of capitalization. (Look for "The Fox and the Farmer" and "The Babes In The Wood" a little ways down.)
As an example of how things can go astray alphabetically, consider the rhyme starting variously "Old Mistress McShuttle", "Old Mrs. McShuttle", and "Old Mother Shuttle". They were quite widely scattered in the index - even though they all start with "old m". There may still be a few cases where the same rhyme pops up in widely separated places. You might have fun looking for instances of this. Let me know if you find one.
